Myanmar
Myanmar (aka Burma) is ruled by a military junta, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), which was formerly known under the ill-sounding name of SLORC (State Law and Order Restoration Council.) If you are not aware of the situation in Myanmar, please read the Human Rights Watch report.
Entering Myanmar feels like turning the clock back 100 years. Roads are mostly unpaved. Banks are practically inexistent, most of the trade happens on the black market.
The oppressiveness and pervasiveness of the government constrast sharply with the sweetness and welcoming attitude of its people.
We stopped shortly in the capital Yangoon between two flights. We then went to temple-ridden Bagan, a UNESCO world heritage site. Finally, we stopped in the northern city of Mandalay, before heading towards Chiang Mai in Thailand.
